What is CBT?

Understanding CBT: The Path to Clearer Thinking and Lasting Change.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy designed to help you manage psychological distress by changing your thought patterns and behaviours. It is a widely used form of psychotherapy where you collaborate with a mental health professional in a structured manner, typically over a limited number of sessions.

CBT will help you recognise negative or inaccurate thinking, commonly called Negative Automatic Thoughts (NATs). This helps you to view challenging situations more clearly and respond to them more effectively.

CBT is one of the most researched types of psychotherapy; therefore, we know it can work.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network suggest, on the basis of robust scientific data, that individuals can benefit from CBT over a much shorter period than other psychotherapies.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a transformative tool for overcoming emotional challenges.

It can empower you to:

  • Manage symptoms of mental illness and prevent relapse of those symptoms
  • Explore treatment options when medications are not suitable
  • Equip yourself with coping techniques for stressful situations
  • Explore ways to manage your emotions
  • Resolve relationship conflicts and enhance communication skills
  • Cope with grief or loss with resilience
  • Heal from emotional trauma linked to abuse or violence
  • Cope with medical illnesses including long term illness
  • Manage chronic physical symptoms

CBT is also used to treat many psychological issues like:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders (Phobias,
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder)
  • Sleep disorders
  • Substance use disorders
  • Bipolar disorders
  • Schizophrenia
  • Psychosis
  • Sexual disorders

Important notice

You do not need to have a mental health condition to benefit from CBT. It can also help anyone learn how to manage stressful life situations more effectively.

During your CBT treatment, you will learn to become your own therapist. Working collaboratively, I will bring my knowledge, skills, and experience to help give you the tools to help you navigate and over come the psychological issues that you bring to our sessions. By learning many helpful techniques, you can use them in many other life-challenging situations. During our CBT journey, you will learn how to identify your negative automatic thoughts and deal with them. We will discuss many behaviours that get in the way of making your life as enjoyable as possible and explore others that will make you feel better.

Therapy is a process that we will go through together because your health matters.
